You can’t…
The initial symptoms of CO poisoning are similar to the flu (but without the fever) They include:

Headache

Fatigue

Shortness of Breath

Nausea

Dizziness

If you suspect that you are experiencing CO poisoning, get fresh air immediately. Leave the home and call for assistance from a neighbor’s home. You could lose consciousness and die from CO poisoning if you stay in the home.

What should you do?

Proper installation, operation, and maintenance of fuel-burning appliances in the home is the most important factor in reducing the risk of CO poisoning. Have your heating system inspected and serviced annually by FisherAir.

Look for problems that could indicate improper appliance operations:

Decreased hot water supply

Furnace unable to heat house or runs continuously

Sooting, especially on appliances and vents

Unfamiliar, or burning odor

Increased moisture inside of windows

Operate portable generators outdoors and away from open doors, windows, and vents that could allow CO to come indoors.

In addition, install battery-operated CO alarms or plug-in CO alarms with battery back-up in your home. Every home should have a CO alarm in the hallway near the bedrooms in each separate sleeping area. The CO alarms should be certified to the requirements of the most recent UL, IAS, or CSA standard for CO alarms. Test your CO alarms frequently and replace dead batteries. A CO alarm can provide added protection, but is no substitute for proper installation, use and upkeep of appliances that are potential CO sources.

Carbon monoxide clues you can see…

Rusting or water streaking on vent/chimney

Loose or missing furnace panel

Sooting

Debris or soot falling from chimney, replace, or appliances

Loose masonry on chimney

CO Warning and Safe Practices

Never leave a car running in a garage even with the garage door open.

Never run a generator in the home, garage, or crawlspace. Opening doors and windows or using fans will NOT prevent CO build-up in the home. When running a generator outdoors, keep it away from open windows and doors.

Never burn charcoal in homes, tents, vehicles, or garages.

Never install or service combustion appliances without proper knowledge, skills, and tools.

Never use a gas range, oven, or dryer for heating.

Never put foil on bottom of a gas oven because it interferes with combustion.

Never operate an unvented gas-burning appliance in a closed room or in a room in which you are sleeping.

Carbon monoxide clues you cannot see…

Internal appliance damage or malfunctioning components

Improper burner adjustments

Hidden blockage or damage in chimneys Only a trained service technician can detect hidden problems and correct these conditions!

CO poisoning symptoms have been experienced when you are home, but they lessen or disappear when you are away from home.

FisherAir’s qualified technicians can help keep your family safe by performing CO tests on your furnace and home by installing CO detectors and CO low level monitors.

Furnaces

There are two types of major furnaces. Multi-speed and Variable Speed. We’ll help you understand what they are, and how they work.

Multi-Speed 2 Stage Furnace

A traditional single stage furnace operates in either “on” or “off” mode. When the furnace turns on, it turns on to 100% of its capacity. Like turning on the water faucet all the way even if you need just a small stream of water. It’s not very efficient.

A multi-stage furnace has two different settings. Low heat or 1st stage is the starting point of the heater. It’s set to use about 50% of its normal capacity. It operates on the 1st stage most of the time. Saving money on electric and gas. If more heat is needed, (like during cold spells) to heat the house up faster, then the furnace will turn on the higher setting in order to provide additional heating all while saving power and being energy efficiency.

Variable Speed Furnace

A variable speed furnace is another type of energy efficient heater. The term “variable speed” refers to the blower motor in the furnace. This technology allows the blower to adjust its output speed based on the heating demands of your home. Like the 2 stage furnace above, this furnace allows the fan motor to start off slowly and increases output gradually as needed. The furnace generally creates less noise and can operate at the need and capacity the required heating demands.

It uses less electricity than other types of motors. Rather than operating in an “on/off” fashion like older furnaces or on a “high/low” setting like a multi-stage, a variable speed furnace provides precise air flow and heat based on exactly how much heat your home needs. Fuel and electrical efficiency, heating consistency, noise reduction, and cleaner air are all benefits of this type of furnace.

Take Control of Your Allergies!

Allergies and You.

If you are someone who struggles with allergies or even if you live with people who do, you know how frustrating they can be to deal with on a daily basis. Thankfully for those who suffer from the constant runny nose or itchy throat, there is a way to combat these symptoms and it can all start with maintaining a good HVAC system.

What are allergies?

Allergic reactions are one of the most common chronic diseases. It’s caused by exposure to proteins that are normally present in secretions from an animal including animal skin cells, saliva or urine. The bodies immune system sees the substance as an invasion or harmful attack and overreacts to it. Even though it is harmless to most people.

What Steps Can I Take to Reduce My Allergies?

Helpful tips to reducing your allergies.

Allergens are carried into your home through the air and settle inside your home. It can settle in the carpet, on surfaces and brought in your home by your furry little friends. The air inside your home is mostly recycled and if you have pets, you know they share the same space you do and this can affect your AIR QUALITY.

The Solution: HVAC Maintenance.

High-quality furnace filters
High-quality furnace filters are your first defense against poor indoor air quality. If you don’t have a high-efficiency air cleaner and use standard filters, you’ll want to find a filter with a MERV 8 rating or higher. These filters can trap microscopic particles in the air. This will help reduce indoor allergens. Filters should be replaced at least once a month.

Reduce pet dander.
You can reduce animal dander by washing your pet once a week.

Dusting everything inside your home.
You know that dust can build up easily inside the home. (Sometimes it feels like it never ends.) Tackling the tasks of cleaning can help ease allergies. Simple cleaning techniques such as

Vacuuming once or twice a week

Dusting furniture and surfaces

Washing your sheets weekly

Cleaning the clutter around your home (piles of clothes, boxes)

Having annual maintenance performed on your HVAC system.
Annual Maintenance. Spring is a perfect time to have an HVAC maintenance performed on your system. Not only does regular preventative care for your HVAC system help keep the system running healthy and at factory standards. It’s a good opportunity to talk to your technician about options help reduce allergens inside the home.

The Air Inside Your Home.

Have you ever heard that the indoor air quality inside your home is poorer than the air outside? According to the EPA the air inside your home can actually be 10 times worse than the air outside. This applies to everyone, but especially those who live in or near large cities.

Hospitals are known to have very high standards for indoor air quality. Their goal is to keep the air sterile as possible for patients. Achieving good indoor air quality is easier than you think. If you’ve ever had a conversation with an HVAC technician about indoor air quality, you might have heard him talk about an Ultraviolet light (UV Light.) It can be installed in an HVAC system.

Can UV Lights Really Help My Indoor Air Quality?

A UV light is installed in HVAC systems near the coil to kill mold and other types of bacterial growth that grow inside the HVAC system. The UV Light cleans the air by killing any spores, fungal particles, airborne illnesses, germs, viruses and other harmful things as they pass by the light.

How Do We Know They Work?

Two studies were performed to point out the effectiveness of UV light in killing mold and bacteria, one in hospitals and the other in a commercial HVAC system.

Ultraviolet Light Effective in Hospital Infection Control – In 2012, Researchers at Duke University Medical Center used ultraviolet radiation (UV-C) to nearly eliminate drug-resistant bacteria in 50 hospital rooms in two medical facilities. It reduced the number of bacteria by more than 97%.

Effectiveness of Germicidal UV Radiation for Reducing Fungal Contamination within Air-Handling Units – A test was performed in a commercial office building, and after 4 months of operation, “the fungal levels following UV operation were significantly lower than the levels in control AHUs (air handler units).”

UV Lights are more important for those who reside in humid areas or areas prone to mold or for those who are at risk with severe health issues. A UV light is a unique and effective way to safely clean and purify the air within your home.

Please note that UV lights do not combat allergens such as pet dander, pollen or dust as this is the job of your air cleaner.

What Are Some of the Benefits of UV Lights?

Here are 5 reasons why:

Control mold and bacteria inside the HVAC system and your home.

Combat colds, flu and other germs that spread inside your home.

Refreshes the air and reduces bad odors (cooking, smoke, and other odors.)

It can help prevent clogging in condensation drain lines.

It will contribute to a cleaner coil and better cooling efficiency.

Using a high-efficiency air cleaner and UV light is the best way to enjoy the cleanest air possible.
